A dear friend once warned me: "If you give something to everybody who NEEEEEEEEDS you, when the people who matter the most, or the people that you can help the best come to you, and you really WANT to, you will have nothing left to give them."

Asrik said it beautifully...and I would add that some people really NEED to be told "no"...regardless of what they want, or imagine that you ought to give them. The Universe can be efficient that way. A well placed "no" serves you both.

The hardest lesson I ever learned was that those people who swear they will perish without whatever you have to give...always manage to thrive without you, long after they've sucked you dry. And some of them, when left with no other choice, actually learn to manage for themselves. Imagine my surprise.

And I absolutely adore the Lee who will say to me: I cannot handle that many words from you right now. :)

I am glad you've said these things. I have a couple of thoughts to add.

1. There are people who exist in a state of needing help and, unconciously or not, are actually content in that place. They don't genuinely want help, what they need, what their narrative needs, is for their lives to suck. Attempting to help them isn't even assuaging a need for drama/energy, it is entirely counterproductive.
2. I have spent time with many versions of you and, as someone who knows you a little bit, I can tell when I am spending time with *trumpet sound* LEE HARRINGTON, TEH AWESOMENESS. Don't get me wrong, SUPERLEE is nice enough, but I hope you remember that the Lee who just wants me to go away because he is tired or angry, is equally or more fascinating. Personally I prefer a thriving, fullfilled, occasionally grouchy Lee (who doesn't answer my emails) over Lee-the-cardboard-cutout.

Remember that the flame burns in all of us and every single time you walk towards thriving you strengthen your connection to it. Remember that the way to live life in the hands of the gods is as a fullfilled being, not a cardboard cut-out.

We (my wife and I) have been around to see Harmony start from the beginning, and have felt privileged to be allowed to watch it grow. We have similar dreams, though based more around farming than anything else.

It was fun to meet you at the party, maybe some time we can sit down and talk, when the world is not in the living room, so to speak.

And it was great meeting you this past weekend. Every person who comes to Harmony House, whether guest, friend, or extended family member enchiches the experience… especially those who grok what they see. And you, grokked.

I say this from seeing Harmony House form from the early stages (giving it the nickname the Stronghold before they found the property are on now), and watching it grow. As chaotic as it may seem to some people, I visit not only to be with my boyfriend who lives there, but to connect with everyone and recharge my batteries.

Hint- if you want to do dishes, don't ask for permission. Sneak in when Diamond isn't there and just start doing them. :)

You are most perceptive. I've known Diamond her entire life, and you've summed up her awesomeness in one post from one weekend.

This sounds like an Arcosanti project built with love. I grew up around the Arcosanti (Arizona) commune and they also knew that bringing knowledge together, communicating beyond politics, religion, technology and ego would be the true building blocks of future generations. While they have compassion and well being for each other, I think they shadow over love and family bonds (including our mycelium tribe from Asrik) that Erosong and Harmony House have created in the smaller scale.
Agreed, very beautiful.

I spent Yule at Erosong and had a similar experience. I stayed up with several amazing teenagers and adults sitting vigil. We watched musicals, ate junk food, and talked about boys. The kind of love that suffuses that house is so revolutionary that I was almost bowled over. Our conversations about love, gender, magic, and family made me feel so strong in myself. In the power of our ideas. The strength of this, our mycelium tribe. I kept thinking "THIS! YES! I want this. I need this. I would lay down my life for this. I will spend my life creating, facilitating, and protecting this."
